چکیده

A pneumomediastinum is a condition in which air is present in the mediastinum. It can result from a pulmonary barotrauma which occurs during sCUBA (self contained underwater breathing apparatus) diving. We report on a fifteen-year-old patient who suffered from a pulmonary barotrauma including a pneumomediastinum after sCUBA diving. The patient was admitted to the PICU (Paediatric Intensive Care Unit) and treated conservatively. subsequently the patient developed neurological deficits resulting from an arterial gas embolism (AGE). This case report discusses some of the principles of the pathophysiology and clinical presentation of diving emergencies.

It is a condition caused by an increase of intrathoracic pressure and air leaking from the trachea, bronchi, alveoli, or esophagus into the mediastinum. Although it is often a self-limiting disease, it requires admis...

Scuba diving enhances endogenous antioxidant defenses in lymphocytes and neutrophils.

The aim was to study the effects of a scuba diving session on the lymphocyte antioxidant system, NO synthesis, the capability to produce reactive oxygen species and the antioxidant response in neutrophils. For that purpose seven male divers performed an immersion at a depth of 40 m for 25 min. The same parameters were measured after an hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) treatment at resting conditions in ...
